Family Background:
William John was the only child of Thomas Barnfather and his second wife Jane nee Rutherford. Thomas had been a railway signalman for the whole of his working life. Both the Rutherford and Barnfather families originated in Northumberland and were sheep famers.
In the summer of 1940, William John married Vera Lightfoot, of Haltwhistle, Northumberland. He died a few weeks later in November.
