War Service: 106 squadron. Took off from RAF Coningsby at 0200. His Hampden Mk I P4323 was hit by naval flak and crashed into Heligoland Bight. Buried in Kiel War Cemetery. It was the only plane of the 23 who took off that night to be lost. It was part of Operation Gardening, they were minelaying off Wilhelmshaven and Heligoland. The aim was to drop mines to disrupt shipping. This operations were often assigned to new members of the squadron. The planes had to fly at only 1500 feet, and accuracy in dropping the mines was essential. Low level flying meant the planes were at risk from flak.
