War Service: Killed by enemy action.
Information from grandson, Ian Smith 2011: “……….my grandfather was killed by enemy action during WW2 and I believe he is also on your memorial as well as the one within the entrance foyer of the Civic Centre. He worked for Carlisle Council and was a member of the RAF Auxiliary and volunteered for service along with others from the Council. ..
After less than a year’s service at RAF Coltishall in Norfolk, he and others including Battle of Britain Aces went for a quiet pint on the Saturday night in the Ferry Inn at Horning on the Norfolk Broads. Unfortunately my grandfather and Brian Von Metz turned down a lift into Norwich to continue the night out, instead staying at the Ferry Inn. The Luftwaffe bombed the pub that night killing grandfather and 21 others including locals and other RAF personnel. Had more pilots remained at the Ferry Inn 222 (Natal) Sqn could have been decimated.
