Family Background:
Son of John Flockhart, and of Jenny (nee Hedley) Flockhart. They were married at Morpeth, Jenny had been born in Bellingham, and John and their children were born in Morpeth. Paternal grandfather was a miner; in 1911 John was also working as a coal miner at Bedlington Colliery. John was one of 9 children (of whom only 5 were living in 1911). In 1921 John was still working at the mines. John died of TB (and epilepsy) aged 37 on 9th June 1928 at Innes Hopkins Memorial Home, Bedlington. Thomas was the elder of two sons. The boys were just 6 and 4 when they lost their father.
Thomas’s brother Albert died in 1944 at Portland, Dorset. Albert had also been in the Royal Navy and was a stoker. He was just 20 when he died, also in hospital of a blocked intestine, exactly like Thomas. Albert is buried at Portland RN Cemetery.
