    CWGC say John was the son of Edwin and Elizabeth (nee Mee) Hammond of Carlisle, and that he was married to Florence Winifred (nee Smith) Hammond in 1938 in Carlisle. His parents were married 1906 in Chesterfield. Father was a joiner. Two older brothers, Alfred Leslie and George Edwin. 

    In 1939 John and his wife, Florence are living at the Binnacle, Port Carlisle with her parents and younger brother. They appear to have had son, Paul Walter, born in 1940. Florence died in 1970 in Houghton, Carlisle.

    In the 1939 Register father Edwin is working as a builders’ foreman in Birmingham and describes himself as single. However he is living with Beatrice Fairbrother. 

    Records at Liverpool University name John’s father as William Burrow.
