Parents were Fred and Florence (nee Hornsby) Hadwen, both born in 1891. They married in Carlisle in 1918. Fred was a Munitions worker. Address, Scholar Green Lane, Morecambe. Florence was from Carlisle and had returned to her home town to give birth. In 1921, Fred was a labourer at the National Filling Factory (munitions).

Took off from Linton-upon-Ouse outside York, in a Halifax, on 24th September. It was a bombing raid of 28 aeroplanes: 5 failed to return. The weather was incredibly bad and only 16 aircraft claimed to have located and bombed Flensburg. The crews had to descend to 2000′ to see the target.

John was reported as missing since raid over Flensburg, September 1942. He was part of a 7 man crew. All were lost without trace and presumed dead in 1944. The crew included F/S Pattison, P/O AGT Bradley, Sgt A Taylor, Sgt C A Newman, Sgt A W Jones and Sgt R A Kelly. It was later discovered that it had been shot down by a night fighter into the North Sea 15 miles north of Terschelling.
