  • Family Background: Son of Arthur and Anne Jane Fearnley, of Brampton, Cumberland, England. Father was born in Oakham, Rutland and Mother in Carlisle. James was born in Longtown. 

    Arthur served in the Northumberland Fusiliers in the First World War. He was shot but the bullet hit his paybook, saving his life.

    Father – Publican. In 1921 he was at the Globe in Longtown; in 1939, he was at the Bluebell Inn, Scotch Street, Carlisle.

    In 1939 also living with the family was Agnes Fearnley, widowed, aged 79 (Grandmother).

    As James was killed the family was living at The Bush Hotel, Brampton, Cumberland.

    Arthur died in 1947, Anne in 1962.

     

 Inscription on the grave: An Only Child Make him to be numbered with thy saints in glory everlasting.

It is poignant to note James’s mother visited the grave in 1950.
