Family Background:
Son of Dr James and Jessie Miller Melville Lamberton, of Carlisle. Address: 3, Marlborough Gardens, Stanwix. Father James was a Medical Officer, he qualified in Edinburgh in 1912. James was born in 1884 and Jessie in 1890. The couple were married in 1919 in Inverness. James was from Lanark, Glasgow, and Jessie was from Ayr.
The boys were born at the Bridge of Earn, Scotland.
Elder brother William Melville, who was also a pilot in RAF. was taken prisoner in France near St Omer in July 1941. He was injured having been hit by fire from an ME109. He spent 2 months in hospital where he and a kidney removed and he said he received excellent care. Later he spent time as a POW in various Stalags inside Germany; he was freed on 16th April 1945. William died in 2000 in Plymouth.
