Biographical Information

  • John’s father was Edward Smith, Customs and Excise Officer. His mother was Eleanor Jane Smith, nee Brockbank. They were married in 1911.

    Young Edward John was born in Dumfries. He has no siblings (1921 Census – living Aglionby Street, Carlisle).

    Husband of Patricia Grenfell Brockbank, of Glasgow. Patricia was born in Carlisle, nee Alderson. Her address upon marriage was 9, Chatsworth Square. Her marriage to John Richard Brockbank (formerly Edward John Smith) is recorded as 9th April 1938. He was 24 and a Customs and Excise Officer in Edinburgh. He was living in Caledonian Place. 

    In 1939 the parents aged 85 and 81 are still living on Aglionby Street. It is unclear why their son now goes by the name John Richard Brockbank.
