Harold was the youngest of five children of Joseph and Ethel Mary Hutchinson, of Carlisle. His sister Clara said he was the cleverest of the lot. The family lived at Nelson Street. Older brother Joseph recalled a happy-go-lucky family, with Harold having a mischievous streak, annoying him by stealing his bicycle. He was fair and grew up to be 6’ tall.
