Family Background:
Son of the Revd. Walter Bancroft, M.A., vicar of St Michael’s ,Stanwix,and Margaret May Bancroft; husband of Ethel Muriel Bell, of Carlisle. They were married on 28th August 1943.They had a baby boy on 3rd July 1944 eight months after he died. His father officiated at his own son’s funeral; and three days later he buried Sydney Elder and Sidney Tweddle who had been killed in the same aeroplane when it crashed in Yorkshire.
