Family Background:
Son of Charles William Donald, M.D., F.R.C.S.E., and Mary Elinor Donald, of Carlisle. Father was born in Orkney and graduated from Edinburgh University. He had conducted research in the Antarctic (he published a paper on penguins) and had served in the Boer War in South Africa, and in the First World War working on the typhoid ward at the hospital in Alexandria, Egypt. He died in Carlisle in 1932. Mother came from Knutsford, Cheshire. Maiden name, Longridge. She died in Guildford.
Alexander was their third son. Older brothers were James Clousten (1912), Charles Russell (1915) and younger brother David Longridge (1922). David was a Captain in the Royal Artillery, wounded January 1945 in Stein, Germany (outside Nuremberg where there was fierce fighting at that time).
1932 address was Portland Square in Carlisle. Father died in 1932. Mother was living at 72, Hartington Place, Carlisle, when news of her son’s death was received.
