Son of the Revd. William Herbert Campbell and Elizabeth Campbell, nee Clark, of Acomb, York. They were married in 1911. Father was a Primitive Methodist Minister. He ministered in Shipley, Scotland, and Sunderland before moving to Carlisle in 1928. Later he went to Darlington, Birmingham, and York.
Alan had one sister, Kathleen, known as Kate.
