He was in the school\u2019s Rugby, football and cricket teams in 1897. He won the swimming cup in 1896 and 1897.<\/p>\n<p>According to Liber Vitae Reginensium \u00a0(Queen\u2019s Oxford) Edward was \u201c<em>healthy and strong, used to play cricket &amp; fives, can sing, interest in old books, lives 4BQ top right front under Allen<\/em>\u201d. While there, he was a member of the Oxford University Rifle Volunteer Corps.<\/p>\n<p>Edward matriculated with a Thomas Exhibition in 1898, took pass moderations and then read for the final school of English literature, in which he obtained a third class honours.<\/p>\n<p>Edward graduated as a BA in 1902 and MA in 1910. He became a Classics master at Rotherham grammar school. He was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the\u00a0Somme, July 1, 1916 at Serre.\u00a0 He was 37.<\/p>\n<p>In the photograph we have of him with three other soldiers, Alexander Robertson, also an Oxford graduate, was also killed on 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0July 1916; as was William Wyatt Bagshawe.
