He grew up living at the Vicarage, although by 1911 his home address (following the death of his father) was 170, Warwick Road, Carlisle. Three of his brothers also attended the grammar school, of these two served in the War and survived.<\/p>    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- \/module text -->        <\/div>\n                    <\/div>\n                    <\/div><!-- .accordion-content -->\n        <\/li>\n            <li>\n            <div class=\"accordion-title tf_rel\">\n                <a href=\"#acc-bee5d40-1\" class=\"tb_title_accordion\" aria-controls=\"acc-bee5d40-1-content\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n                                                            Academic Record                <\/a>\n            <\/div><!-- .accordion-title -->\n            <div id=\"acc-bee5d40-1-content\" data-id=\"acc-bee5d40-1\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"accordion-content tf_hide tf_clearfix\">\n                        <div  data-lazy=\"1\" class=\"module_subrow themify_builder_sub_row tf_w col_align_top tb_col_count_1 tb_6a28257\">\n                <div  data-lazy=\"1\" class=\"module_column sub_column tb_g1id257 first\">\n                    <!-- module text -->\n<div  class=\"module module-text tb_i2s7257   \" data-lazy=\"1\">\n        <div  class=\"tb_text_wrap\">\n        <p>Douglas attended\u00a0Appleby School under Mr Leach for about a year prior to spending nine years at Carlisle under Mr Williams.\u00a0Douglas was excellent at sport and was in the school\u2019s Rugby team from 1906-9 ending up as captain. From 1904-10 he was in the cricket team also becoming captain, and was also in the football team from 1908-10 which is why there are so many photos of him! He gained the senior challenge cup in 1910, and the school medal for sport. He was editor of the Carliol magazine and was a member of the debating society. In the debating society he spoke for \u201d\u00a0<em>That the press has more power than the pulpit<\/em>\u201d and that \u201c<em>War is justifiable<\/em>\u201c. He played Captain Absolute in \u201c<em>The Rivals<\/em>\u201c, and donated a copy of the adventure story \u00a0\u201c<em>Lost in the Slave Land\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0by W. M. Graydon to the school library.<\/p>\n<p>Elected Thomas Exhibitioner in June 1910 to Queens Oxford. This was during the second phase of the Battle of the Somme. On 4 September the Germans had launched a counter-attack on the newly won British position near Mouquet Farm (commonly known as Mucky Farm), but were repulsed by the Australians. There was significant fighting in the area during the following three weeks. On September 10 the 1\/16<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Londons attacked from Leuze Wood (or Lousy Wood) but had little success as the Germans held the village of Combles and their machine guns were able to hold off the British attack. Eventually a joint Anglo-French assault forced the enemy from Combles on September 25. His provost reported that Douglas was: \u201c<em>healthy &amp; strong, played cricket and football, didn\u2019t debate much, can sing &amp; play the piano, hopes to be a schoolmaster, lives 4BQ ground back left under Clark\u2019.<\/em>\u201d After leaving College he became an assistant master at Cranbrook , Kent .<\/p>\n<p>His family had \u201c<em>I will dwell in the House of the Lord Forever<\/em>\u201d put on his tombstone.<\/p>\n<p>In the Nicoll family archive Douglas is mentioned in some letters<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 JS Nicoll to JF Nicoll, 15.7.16<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<em>We are now back in the trenches, but just the reserves\u2026 I had a letter from Shepherd the other day.\u00a0 He appears to be having a topping time somewhere near the sea\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p>idem, 24.7.16<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018DAM Shepherd is still at Havre waiting to go in the next draft to the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0I suppose. he is a L<\/em>\/Cpl\u2019<\/p>\n<p>JS Nicoll to Mary (his younger sister)<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<em>Shepherd appears to be having quite a decent time out here and talks glibly of bathing in the sea whereas we sometimes don\u2019t get a wash for a week.
