Horan and his wife Edith. Both families had an army and church tradition, which included service overseas, Beresford\u2019s father was born in India and was Chaplain of All Saint\u2019s, Cairo when Beresford died. The Horan family also had a tradition of attending Cambridge University. Beresford\u2019s family moved around with his father\u2019s career. Frederick Seymour Horan was chaplain and secondly to Marlborough College (1905-07).\u00a0 However, in 1909 aged just seventeen, he defied family tradition and emigrated to Canada to farm. He was still in Ontario in 1911<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- \/module text -->        <\/div>\n                    <\/div>\n                    <\/div><!-- .accordion-content -->\n        <\/li>\n            <li>\n            <div class=\"accordion-title tf_rel\">\n                <a href=\"#acc-770848c-2\" class=\"tb_title_accordion\" aria-controls=\"acc-770848c-2-content\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n                                                            War Service:                <\/a>\n            <\/div><!-- .accordion-title -->\n            <div id=\"acc-770848c-2-content\" data-id=\"acc-770848c-2\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"accordion-content tf_hide tf_clearfix\">\n                        <div  data-lazy=\"1\" class=\"module_subrow themify_builder_sub_row tf_w col_align_top tb_col_count_1 tb_27y6655\">\n                <div  data-lazy=\"1\" class=\"module_column sub_column tb_g64u655 first\">\n                    <!-- module text -->\n<div  class=\"module module-text tb_3s1h655   \" data-lazy=\"1\">\n        <div  class=\"tb_text_wrap\">\n        <p>Beresford\u00a0 is unusual amongst those on the memorial as he died before reaching Europe so he never entered the field of battle.<\/p>\n<p>He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps June 14 1913, where he served for nearly two years, and was in the band, based mainly in California.\u00a0 In Feb 1915 he is listed as a deserter from the 4<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Regiment in the US Marines. We have been unable to find out why he deserted, however we do know that some soldiers deserted the American Army to join up elsewhere as they wished to fight and the USA did not enter WW1 until 1917.<\/p>\n<p>Within\u00a0six months Beresford had joined the 30<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Wellington Rifles as part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF). He was given the rank of 2<sup>nd<\/sup>Lieutenant, however he was listed as a deserter on Nov 17 1915, and died on Christmas Eve 1915. His army record gives no reason or explanation. The Carlisle Memorial Register \u00a0and his obituary in the Cumberland News both state that he \u201c<em>died from pneumonia following diphtheria contracted while training with the CEF<\/em>\u201d. However he was in disgrace.
