He was the only surviving child of Daniel &amp; Hannah Driscoll of 14 Cumberland St, Denton Holme, Carlisle. I believe on leaving school he first became a motor mechanic, possibly at Dias&#8217;s Garage as that&#8217;s where my father also worked and I know they were good friends. We next hear of him down in Kent were he had joined the police force as a constable driving the first police patrol cars.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Dan and Helena were married in January 1943. 56 Sqn was moved down to Norfolk, as the Germans had been using Fw 190 fighter bombers to launch hit and run raids on the S E coast. The Hawker Typhoon was the only RAF plane at that time fast enough to counter them. My Aunt was only married for 3 months, she never remarried. She continued to work at Carrs and McVities as it later became, to become manager of the wages department. She retired in 1975, She sadly died in March of this year {2011} aged 96. Then in 1940 the London Blitz began and he was sent in to assist the city police. After many months assisting pulling the bodies of hundreds of civilians from the rubble of the East End, he was so horrified and angry that he applied to join the RAF to take the fight back to the Germans. <span style=\"font-size: 1em;\">By 1941 he had sailed in convoy to Canada, the skies of N America being far safer to learn to fly than war torn Britain. After the USA joined the war in December 1941,they opened up their training programme to RAF pupils, and we next find him at Cochran Field near Atlanta Georgia USA. He must have passed with good marks as on return to the UK he was posted to 56 fighter squadron.(the best grade pilots went to fighter squadrons).\u00a0<\/span><\/em><em>56 Sqn was just equipping with the new Hawker Typhoon fighter, and were sent north to learn to operate it, For a time they were at Chapelcross near Annan (the nuclear power plant was later built on the airfield). He was courting my aunt by this time, so this posting meant he could visit her regularly.
