Kite, Royal Navy Sept. \u201944 Officially reported missing and presumed killed in action.<\/p>\n<p><i>Kite<\/i>\u00a0took part in the sinking of five U-boats together with several sister ships:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On 24 June 1943\u00a0<a title=\"German submarine U-449\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_submarine_U-449\"><i>U-449<\/i><\/a>\u00a0was sunk near\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Cape Ortegal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cape_Ortegal\">Cape Ortegal<\/a>, Spain by the sloops\u00a0<a title=\"HMS Wren (U28)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HMS_Wren_(U28)\"><i>Wren<\/i><\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"HMS Woodpecker (U08)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HMS_Woodpecker_(U08)\"><i>Woodpecker<\/i><\/a>,\u00a0<i>Kite<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"HMS Wild Goose (U45)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HMS_Wild_Goose_(U45)\"><i>Wild Goose<\/i><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>On 30 July 1943\u00a0<a title=\"German submarine U-462\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_submarine_U-462\"><i>U-462<\/i><\/a>\u00a0was sunk in the Bay of Biscay by a\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Handley-Page Halifax\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Handley-Page_Halifax\">Handley-Page Halifax<\/a>\u00a0aircraft and\u00a0<i>Wren<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Kite<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Woodpecker<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Wild Goose<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"HMS Woodcock (U90)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HMS_Woodcock_(U90)\"><i>Woodcock<\/i><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>On 30 July 1943\u00a0<a title=\"German submarine U-504\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_submarine_U-504\"><i>U-504<\/i><\/a>\u00a0was sunk near Cape Ortegal by\u00a0<i>Kite<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Woodpecker<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Wren<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Wild Goose<\/i>.<\/li>\n<li>On 6 November 1943\u00a0<a title=\"German submarine U-226\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_submarine_U-226\"><i>U-226<\/i><\/a>\u00a0was sunk east of\u00a0<a title=\"Dominion of Newfoundland\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dominion_of_Newfoundland\">Newfoundland<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<a title=\"HMS Starling (U66)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HMS_Starling_(U66)\"><i>Starling<\/i><\/a>,\u00a0<i>Woodcock<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Kite<\/i>.<\/li>\n<li>On 9 February 1944\u00a0<a title=\"German submarine U-238\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_submarine_U-238\"><i>U-238<\/i><\/a>\u00a0was sunk south-west of Ireland by\u00a0<i>Kite<\/i>,\u00a0<a title=\"HMS Magpie (U82)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HMS_Magpie_(U82)\"><i>Magpie<\/i><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Starling<\/i>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On 20 August 1944\u00a0<i>Kite<\/i>\u00a0was escorting the\u00a0<a title=\"Aircraft carrier\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aircraft_carrier\">aircraft carriers<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"HMS Vindex (D15)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HMS_Vindex_(D15)\"><i>Vindex<\/i><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"HMS Striker (D12)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HMS_Striker_(D12)\"><i>Striker<\/i><\/a>, which in turn were escorting convoy JW 59 to Northern Russia when the convoy was sighted in the\u00a0<a title=\"Barents Sea\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barents_Sea\">Barents Sea<\/a>\u00a0by German aircraft. Soon a pack of U-boats attacked the convoy and one U-boat was sunk by\u00a0<a title=\"Fairey Swordfish\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fairey_Swordfish\">Fairey Swordfish<\/a>\u00a0aircraft from one of the carriers. Two more were sunk by other destroyers.<\/p>\n<p>At 06:30 on 21 August,\u00a0<i>Kite<\/i>\u00a0slowed to 6 knots (11\u00a0km\/h) to untangle her &#8220;<a title=\"Foxer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Foxer\">foxers<\/a>&#8221; (anti acoustic torpedo noise makers, towed astern). The decision to do so, rather than severing the foxers&#8217; cables and abandoning them, was made by her temporary commander, Lt Cdr Campbell, a submariner. At that speed\u00a0<i>Kite<\/i>\u00a0was a sitting duck, and she was hit by two torpedoes from\u00a0<a title=\"German submarine U-344\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_submarine_U-344\"><i>U-344<\/i><\/a>\u00a0(commanded by Oberleutnant\u00a0<a class=\"new\" title=\"Ulrich Pietsch (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Ulrich_Pietsch&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Ulrich Pietsch<\/a>) and sank.<\/p>\n<p>Of\u00a0<i>Kite<\/i><span class=\"nowrap\">&#8216;<\/span>s crew of 10 officers and 207 ratings, 60 survived the attack, but from the freezing Arctic water only 14 sailors were picked up alive by\u00a0<a title=\"HMS Keppel (D84)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HMS_Keppel_(D84)\">HMS\u00a0<i>Keppel<\/i><\/a>.
