His Whitley mark V (BD627 ZV-E) took off at 1835 from RAF Kinross on a night cross country training flight. The plane flew into Spey Bay at 0020 on the 1st Nov 1943, only Sgt Jones managed to escape from the aircraft and although badly injured he got into the plane&#8217;s dingy and was picked up by a trawler.
