A full account of the attack can be found on the Queens Royal Surreys website. In summary it had been perceived that the enemy held the depression as a key position between minefields and it had been decided to capture this position for future artillery deployment. 131 Brigade were given the job, code named Braganza. The approach to the depression involved 7 miles by MT and 2 miles on foot. Initially things went well, especially when following on the barrage but then as that stopped, they had encountered heavy defensive fire. A and D companies were left without a single survivor and C company lost all its officers and half the men. Some were taken prisoner by the Italians. B company had some limited success but the attack was then abandoned. During 1st October the positions gained to the north and east of the depression were consolidated.<\/p>\n
It was during this attack that Frederick was *reported missing in the Middle East.
