Father was born in Oakham, Rutland and Mother in Carlisle. James was born in Longtown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Arthur served in the Northumberland Fusiliers in the First World War. He was shot but the bullet hit his paybook, saving his life.<\/p>\n<p>Father &#8211; Publican. He was flying a Hampden Aircraft on a compass swinging exercise and crashed into a mountain, thickly covered with tall trees, in dense fog while on duty. After crawling out of the wreckage, James survived for a an hour, and manged to speak to civilian witnesses. The other occupant had been killed instantly. &#8220;The aircraft was a complete wreck.&#8221;*<\/p>\n<p>James crashed in Ladysmith, Cowichan Valley Regional District, BC,Canada&nbsp; and was buried at Victoria, B.C. Dec 3<sup>rd<\/sup> 1943.
