He was piloting a Wellington on a training flight on the 28th February 1943, he took off at 2130 from RAF Elgin, with him were three crew members. Unfortunately it failed to climb and he attempted to bank the plane around some trees when the plane was only 30 feet off the ground, the bomber went out of control and crash landed. William and two others were killed, Sgt G.E.
