The couple had married at Morpeth. The Bell family originated at Alnwick, Northumberland, James\u2019s grandfather had been a fishmonger, his father a manager of a ships\u2019 chandlery. Killed in action in Burma 1944.<\/p>\n<p>The 9th Battalion of the Border Regiment was defending India when the Japanese attached in March 1944. There was fierce fighting before the Japanese withdrew in July 1944.
