Max was the son of Dr Maxwell and Isabella Ogilvy-Ramsay. He had a sister, Mary, and the 1901 and 1911 Census\u00a0 list both Mary and Max living with their parents at Portland Square, Carlisle.<\/p>\n

Max joined the Royal Flying Corps and was commissioned as a 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0lieutenant on June 7 1917. He was appointed flying officer (pilot) on August 11 1917.<\/p>\nPilot of Bristol F2b bomber, serial number D8081, accompanied by 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0lieut Frank Frewin Crump, RAF as gunner\/ observer. Left\u00a0 Villaverla aerodrome, Italy at 2.40pm August 1 1918, but was in combat with enemy aircraft.\u00a0 Forced to land and crashed on Italian Grossa aerodrome at 3.00pm. \u00a0Aircraft damaged and both pilot and observer were injured.<\/p>\nPilot, Lieut M Ogilvy-Ramsay died of his injuries on \u00a0August 4 1918 aged 20. He is buried at \u00a0Montecchio Precalcino Communal Cemetery Extension, Italy.\u00a0<\/p> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/li>\n

Qualified pilots could apply for this certificate, on payment of a fee \u2026 but as there was a desperate need of pilots in France and Flanders, many pilots were often posted overseas a short time after qualifying\u2026 so there was no time to apply for a Royal Aero Club Aviator\u2019s Certificate. In addition, it was an expense a newly commissioned officer could little afford, as officers had to purchase all their own uniform and flying kit.<\/p> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/li>\n
