Burgh by Sands a few miles west of Carlisle. The farm belonged to his maternal grandfather, Thomas Waugh. Both he and his brother attended the grammar school.\u00a0 His parents, John Alexander and Jane Isabella, and three of his grandparents were born in Scotland, which may have influenced his choice of job and regiment. His brother Thomas Waugh Jessamine, described himself as \u201c<em>Scotch<\/em>\u201d on at least one official document. He also won prizes for high and broad jumping.<\/p>\n<p>After leaving the Grammar School John Morrison joined the Clydesdale Bank in Carlisle. It seems likely that he travelled to Quebec, Canada on \u201c<em>The Virginian<\/em>\u201d, arriving June 2 1911 as he joined the Royal Bank of Canada this has a memorial website, and he is also commemorated there.<\/p>    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- \/module text -->        <\/div>\n                    <\/div>\n                    <\/div><!-- .accordion-content -->\n        <\/li>\n            <li>\n            <div class=\"accordion-title tf_rel\">\n                <a href=\"#acc-03170ed-2\" class=\"tb_title_accordion\" aria-controls=\"acc-03170ed-2-content\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n                                                            War Service:                <\/a>\n            <\/div><!-- .accordion-title -->\n            <div id=\"acc-03170ed-2-content\" data-id=\"acc-03170ed-2\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"accordion-content tf_hide tf_clearfix\">\n                        <div  data-lazy=\"1\" class=\"module_subrow themify_builder_sub_row tf_w col_align_top tb_col_count_1 tb_0bwe319\">\n                <div  data-lazy=\"1\" class=\"module_column sub_column tb_8mr2319 first\">\n                    <!-- module text -->\n<div  class=\"module module-text tb_27jn319   \" data-lazy=\"1\">\n        <div  class=\"tb_text_wrap\">\n        <p>For whatever reason John returned to the UK, and enlisted in Edinburgh on Dec 17 1914 in the 16th Royal Scots.This battalion was famous as McCrae\u2019s battalion; it was a volunteer battalion formed by Sir George McCrae, who famously marched on the pitch at Heart of Midlothian football ground in Edinburgh leading 500 volunteers.
