GOVERNORS

Trinity School is fortunate to have a strong and committed Board of Governors. In the recent Ofsted Inspection Report the following observation was made.

Governors demonstrate a keen awareness of the school's strengths and where improvement is required. They are rigorous in challenging the school to improve and, while they are complimentary about the work of the senior team and staff, they offer a firm resolve in holding them to account.

The Headteacher, senior management team and the governing body work in close partnership. The governing body exercises its functions with a view to fulfilling a largely strategic role in the direction of the school. It establishes the strategic framework by:

  • Setting aims and objectives for the school
  • Adopting policies for achieving those aims and objectives
  • Setting targets for achieving those aims and objectives

The headteacher is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school and for implementation of the strategic framework established by the governing body. Governors are not involved in the detail of the day-to-day management of the school.

The Board of Governors of Trinity School consists of 22 governors, made up as follows:

  1. three elected parent governors
  2. two Local Authority governors
  3. four staff governors, one of whom shall be the Headteacher ex officio, if he so wishes
  4. twelve foundation governors, of whom at least four shall, at the time of their appointment, be eligible as parent governors
  5. one sponsor governor

The Chairman of Governors, Mr D Brian Armstrong, has an association with the school spanning many decades, as a pupil of the Creighton School, as a parent of past pupils at Trinity School and as a governor since the 1980s. He served as Vice Chairman for 15 years and was elected Chairman in May 2007.

Most of the work of governors is done through committees and a senior member of staff is attached to each committee. Every governor is expected to be on at least one committee. At Trinity we have Pastoral, Curriculum, Staffing, Finance & General Purposes and Premises. Each committee is responsible for a number of policies relevant to that committee and much work is done with school staff to regularly review policies.

The work of the governors is supported by the Clerk to the Governors, Mrs Ellen Gosling, who was appointed in September 2007, having previously held the role of Headteacher's PA for 15 years.

SCHOOL POLICIES

Schools are required to have policies in place covering all aspects of the life and work of the school. Many are a legal requirement and others are recommended by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). The Governing Body, together with Senior Management, is responsible for the constant review of policies.

Parents/carers might find it helpful to know what policies are in place at Trinity School. The main areas of interest come under the headings of Pastoral, Curriculum and Premises. In addition the school does have policies that cover Management, Staffing and Finance. For your information you will find on this website Pastoral, Curriculum and Premises Policies plus Management Policy.
